Background

For many years, the skills of project management have been recognised as highly desirable for managers at all levels in an organisation. Most people today can benefit from the application of these skills to some parts of their daily operations.

The increasing complexity of projects implies the need to understand the principles of project management. Taking a structured approach to manage a project greatly increases its chances of success, and avoids the pitfalls that could result in the project becoming a failure.

This course is designed for people who want a grounding in project management principles and practices. It is applicable to project managers, team leaders or managers who have responsibility for software or other types of project.

The Event

This 2-day course will provide an introduction to project management principles and practice. It provides a basis for the initial planning of a software development project, and tracking progress of the project when it is underway.

The course also addresses some more specialised issues pertinent to Project Management, such as estimating, contracts, metrics and risk analysis, as well as "soft" issues, such as team building and company culture.

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

• Define activities for a project, and set up a schedule
• Assign resources to a project plan, and determine dependencies
• Be able to track a project, and take corrective actions, when necessary
• Understand the main issues related to a contract
• Perform a risk analysis, and prioritise the risks
• Understand the approaches to estimating, and some of the tools available
• Use some basic metrics to measure performance
