Software engineering is “the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software” see www.swebok.org

SE STANDARDS

Standards for software engineering have been established by a number of standards bodies, especially in a joint technical committee of the International Standards Organisation in conjunction with the International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7), and also U.S. organisations such as the American Standards Institute (ANSI), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Department of Defence (DOD). The ISO/IEC sub-committee includes approximately 150 standards from software life cycle to software process to software product models to details on programming and measurement and data flows and documentation. Ad hoc or industry standards have also been established by industry groups to address common principles in tool supported areas such as data storage and data transmission and interoperation.
